For many years IRIG has been focusing on both basic and application research on IgY.
As a result, various IgY products have been used as functional ingredients in foods for humans
as well as in feeds for domesticated animals and pets. This website introduces recent research
projects conducted by IRIG on IgY and its application.

Postbiotics of Lactobacillus and their positive effects on the host

Lactobacillus species are among the most widely used probiotics due to their positive health benefit on the host. However, Lactobacilli, when used in the live form, have certain disadvantages including poor survival during storage and possible adverse effects to human especially for at-risk groups such as immunocompromised individuals or people with an abnormal gastrointestinal mucosal barrier.

To overcome these drawbacks, non-viable or killed probiotics have been researched extensively in the last 15 years. Numerous published research papers confirm that non-viable probiotics can confer similar health benefits like their live counterparts. In Dec 2019, the International Scientific Association of Probiotics and Prebiotics (ISAPP) released a consensus statement to choose POSTBIOTIC as an official name for preparations derived from non-viable microorganisms.

In this report, the author will summarize the main action mechanisms of postbiotics from Lactobacillus genus in comparison with live microorganisms (probiotics). Recent studies on heat-killed Lactobacillus johnsonii No.1088 (LJ88), a highly acid-resistant probiotic strain isolated from the stomach of a healthy man in Japan, will be used to illustrate the beneficial effects that postbiotics can confer to patients especially people suffering from GERD and gastritis caused by H. pylori.
